In the “old” days, Sutherland-branded vans delivered spread across the country, with independent butchers taking delivery of large 1lb ceramic pots and selling ‘slices’ wrapped in greaseproof paper.
Long-serving staff remember hot summer days when Edwin Sutherland would pay for everyone to have an ice cream. And he made gifts of turkey and cans of beer every Christmas.
His employees held him in high esteem and were extremely proud to work for him. Consequently, all took enormous pride in their work and, if an important visitor came to the factory everyone ensured the place was spotless without being asked.
“If you wouldn’t eat it, why would our customers?” Edwin used to say: a maxim which applies as much today as it did in the 1960s.
Sutherlands Spreads, became part of the Greencore Group in 2001 but the business remains close to its original ethos of producing high quality products and the traditional recipe is still used to create the Yorkshire Potted Beef, Beef and Tomato, and Beef spreads.
